We are delighted to be funding an historic Yorkshire football club which aims to transform the face of grassroots football in the region whilst scouting for new talent.
Yorkshire Amateurs AFC (known as the Ammers), based in the Chapel Allerton area of Leeds, has, with the support of the Southerns Group, commissioned work to begin on a new seven-a-side 3G pitch, to be used for year-round training purposes. The club plans to extend the use of its new facilities, in particular to local schools, as well as establishing an academy which will be run by UEFA B coaches.
Our support is providing a huge boost for the historic club which will scout for raw talent in the region, developing it both for the benefit of the Ammers and beyond.
Yorkshire Amateurs Chairman, Simon Charlesworth (pictured left in the photograph above), told us: “Receiving the support of the Southerns Group is a huge boost for our club, but we’re also determined that by developing the academy, we will identify, and nurture, local talent. We want to promote involvement in football and create a thriving sports hub.”
Our CEO Andy Kendall-Jones, who as we all know is a fervent Leeds United fan, added: “We believe that we can really develop something very special here, and so I’m absolutely delighted to be involved.”
Andy and Simon intend to be fully hands-on, working together to benefit the club, its players, the local community and young talent throughout Yorkshire.
“We’re a club that takes a great deal of pride in our heritage,” Simon added. “As a team, we predate Leeds United and actually sold Elland Road to them in 1920, for £250. Of course, that much money doesn’t get you very far in the world of football these days! We’re delighted to have the support of the Southerns Group and are confident that, with its backing, we can begin writing a very positive chapter in the club’s history.”
The Yorkshire Amateurs’ first team currently plays in the Northern Counties East League. The ambition is to see a rapid rise, with a place in the professional football leagues in the sights.
